We have lived up here since 2023 and still see the same Ha Long booking mistakes, even after 20-plus cruises of our own. The boats we actually like sell out weeks ahead, and waiting usually means a repurposed older boat or a higher price, not a secret deal.

Ha Long stops are worth it if you want the big caves, cliff hikes, and beaches, but they are the busy part of the bay. The calmer sail for us is Lan Ha, where the stops feel quieter. Whatever area you pick, take the hotel pickup from Hanoi. If you arrange your own ride and run late, the boat will not wait.
