Which Ha Long Bay Cruise Is Best? (Day, 2D1N, or 3D2N)

We've lived in Vietnam since 2023 and we've done 20+ cruises across Ha Long, Lan Ha, and Bai Tu Long. Whenever friends or family visit, we basically always end up on a boat with them, and we try a new one more often than not. From fancy luxury boats to some very questionable karaoke boats, we've seen it all, so this guide is just our personal favourites.

And it matters which one you pick. There are nearly 500 registered tourist boats in Ha Long Bay alone, and the quality varies so much. Which bay you go to, the size of the boat, the activities on board, the food, all of it makes a huge difference to the trip.

The day boat areas are filled with 100s of boats, picking the right one really matters.

The good news is there's a great option whatever time you have. A day cruise still gets you the caves, kayaking, and that postcard view, and it's back in Hanoi the same evening. Two days one night adds sunset on deck and a quiet morning on the water. Three days two nights lets you slow right down and head further out into the bays. We've got favourites for all three below.

Who this is for: first-timers flying into Hanoi who want the limestone postcard without guessing which boat is a trap, couples sneaking a weekend away, families who need a calmer vibe, and friends who message us "just tell us what you'd book." Who it's probably not for: someone with only half a day free, you'd spend most of it in a van or on transport from Hanoi.

How many days do I need for a Ha Long Bay cruise?

One day, two days, three days: the difference isn't just time. A one-day is the postcard run, with the famous caves, a really good lunch, and back in Hanoi before dark. Two days one night is where it gets quiet: sunset from the deck, waking up on the water, a cabin that actually feels like yours. Three days two nights is true relaxation, enough time to slow down and feel like you've actually explored the bays instead of ticking them off. Same water, completely different trip.

If your Vietnam trip is short, pick a good day cruise below and you'll still have a great time. But if you're able to fit in a two- or three-day cruise, we highly recommend it. You'll thank yourself later when you're still on the water and everyone else is already on the highway home.

Ha Long vs Lan Ha vs Bai Tu Long: which bay?

They all look similar on Instagram, but they definitely don't feel the same once you're out there. We'd suggest picking the bay first, then the best boat for that bay.

Ha Long, Lan Ha, and Bai Tu Long: similar bays but totally different experiences.

• Ha Long Bay: The famous one. Iconic cliffs, classic caves like Sung Sot, easy logistics from Hanoi. Also the busiest stretch. Day boats pile in hard, especially around the postcard stops. Still brilliant if you want that classic view and you're okay sharing it for a bit.
• Lan Ha Bay: The quieter cousin. Same jaw-dropping limestone cliffs, but fewer boats and more breathing room. Most boats still leave from Ha Long Bay, so you get those iconic cliffs on the way through before the bay opens up into something calmer and less crowded. Great if you want the scenery without the day-boat pile-up.
• Bai Tu Long Bay: Northeast, quietest of the three. Feels more off-grid, fewer floating parties, slightly more "are we even still on the tourist route?" energy. You need a cruise that specifically routes there, you won't stumble into it by accident. It can have fewer activities than the other two, but if ultimate relaxation and being alone on the water is your main goal, then Bai Tu Long's the one for you.

Day cruises only stick to Ha Long Bay itself. The trip's shorter, so you've got to get back to Hanoi for the evening. But an overnight unlocks Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long. Short on time? A Ha Long day cruise still delivers those iconic views that everyone knows Ha Long for. Want seclusion and don't mind paying a bit more for the quietest route? Bai Tu Long's your bay. A two-day, one-night in Lan Ha Bay is the usual sweet spot for most people.

Is a Ha Long Bay cruise worth it?

Yes, if you pick the right length and don't book the cheapest mystery boat from a street agent outside your hotel. The gap between a good boat and a bad one is huge.

An overnight on the boat is usually where the full experience kicks in: sunset without racing a shuttle, mist on the water when you wake, and caves that feel like caves instead of a queue. A day cruise can be brilliant too when your itinerary is tight. We still love a good day out, and the right boat makes it feel like a proper treat rather than a rushed tour. But in peak season, some usually cheaper repurposed old boats still just dump hundreds of people at the same spots at the same time, and it feels more like a photo op than really getting to enjoy the bay.

Skip it if seasickness wrecks you even on calm water, or if you genuinely hate boats. Personally, Sarah usually gets motion sickness, but on the nicer Ha Long cruises she doesn't feel it at all. The water's so well protected by the limestone cliffs that you barely see a wave. Nobody we've traveled with has ever regretted the overnight.

How do you get there from Hanoi?

Most cruises include a shared shuttle from Old Quarter hotels. Door to pier is roughly two to two and a half hours on the expressway these days, then you're transferring onto the boat at Tuan Chau or Cat Ba side depending on the route.

We'd stick with the official transport even if a private car sounds tempting. If the shuttle runs late, the cruise can adjust and leave a bit later, but with your own car you're the one coordinating with the boat. Either way, make sure you leave early if you're staying on board.

Best 3-day, 2-night Ha Long Bay cruises

If you've got enough days in your trip, this is the best way to enjoy the bays. You get to go further, do more without rushing, and actually get time to sit on the deck with a drink and enjoy the cliffs. This is perfect for couples, honeymoons, and families who hate being herded around photo stops. Our favourites here tick both Ha Long and Lan Ha, so you still get the iconic spots and an easy departure from Ha Long Bay port, but the water quiets down once you're past the day-boat traffic.

• Bays: Lan Ha Bay & Ha Long Bay
• Best for: Couples, families, anyone who wants a smaller and more personal boat
• Activities: Swimming, kayaking, island hopping, multiple cave explorations, cooking class, squid fishing & karaoke
• Why we love it: Gorgeous traditional-style ship, next-level food for the price, and smaller than most cruises so it feels more personal. Great if you want three days without the full luxury bill.

Short on time but still want sunset and sunrise on deck? This is the sweet spot we recommend to most people. You get the cliffs, kayaking, caves, and one proper night on board without eating three days of your Vietnam trip.

• Why we love it: Sailed June 2026 and it still feels like the most modern, polished overnight we've done here. Big luxury rooms, Cloud Nine restaurant, outdoor pool, eco-friendly design, service that actually notices you. This is our favourite two-day, one-night boat right now. Hermes is still excellent, just not quite in the top spot.

• Best for: Couples, honeymooners, spa lovers, anyone after a 5-star feel

• Why we love it: High-end feel without the huge price tag. Big balcony, spa, rooftop bar, and two outdoor pools. Still a brilliant treat-yourself pick.

Best day cruises (no overnight)

Don't have enough time to sleep on the water? These day boats still pack in caves, kayaking, beach stops, and a big lunch, then you're back toward Hanoi the same evening. These cruises will stick to Ha Long Bay only, so you won't be able to make it out to Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long on a day cruise. These are ideal when your itinerary is tight, but you still want those wow moments.

• Why we love it: Sailed March 2026 and it's still the best day cruise we've tried here. Luxury throughout: food, planning, boat, kid rooms, VIP lounges, and they were lovely about dietary stuff. Totally premium and worth it when a day is all you've got.

Frequently asked questions

• Day cruise or overnight? Both are great, it just depends on your time. A good day cruise gets you the caves, kayaking, and the classic views. An overnight adds sunset and a quiet morning on the water. We'd personally always recommend an overnight if your time allows for the full experience.
• 2 days or 3 days? Two is enough for most first-timers. Three is better for couples and anyone who hates rushing. We stretch to three whenever friends can spare it.
• Ha Long or Lan Ha? We personally love routes that spend time in Lan Ha, which is quieter than the busy Ha Long day-boat stretch. Day cruises stay in classic Ha Long because Lan Ha is further out. For overnights, check the bay line on each boat: Rosy and Sunlight do both; others on this page stick to Ha Long or Bai Tu Long.
• Is a Ha Long Bay cruise worth it? Yes if you avoid random street-agent mystery boats and match the length to your trip. Living here since 2023, we still get excited every time we go back.
• How long is the drive from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay? Roughly 2-2.5 hours each way on the expressway by shuttle or private car, then transfer at the pier. Most cruises include shared hotel pickup.
• What about cheaper junk-style boats? We sailed Cozy Bay two-day, one-night in January 2025. It is a budget overnight on a repurposed older junk boat. You feel the water move more when you sleep, the food was more basic, and we would skip it if anyone in our group gets motion sick. The stops were fine, but you'll feel like you're being rushed from photo spot to photo spot. It was an okay boat, but it isn't one we'd recommend to friends going forward.
• When is the best time to go? October to December is lovely for clearer skies. We've gone in every season though, so just pack jumpers in winter. January on the bay is properly cold.
• Do you need to book ahead? Yes for the nicer boats and weekends, especially during peak season. Same-day can work on quieter midweeks during rainy season, but we wouldn't risk it. We generally always recommend booking at least one month ahead just in case.

Final thoughts

Honestly, these bays are still one of our favourite escapes from Hanoi life. Whenever friends or family visit, we always take the chance to try a new boat, which is how our list keeps growing.
